About Us
83 years of choosing sarees well
For 83 years, our family has done one thing: chosen sarees. Not woven them. Not manufactured them. Chosen them — one by one, by hand, against the light of a showroom — for the families who have walked in for weddings, festivals, a daughter's college first day, and quiet Sunday afternoons when something just felt worth wearing.
Ashoka Threads is that same family business, carried online. We are, plainly, a saree retailer. The asset we bring to your purchase is not a loom — it is eight decades of judgement. Three generations of standing in fabric rooms and asking the same question of every saree before it ever makes it onto a hanger: would we let our own family wear this?
If the answer is no, the saree does not get listed. If the answer is yes, you find it here.
What we actually do
We hand-pick sarees from across India. From the Banaras weaving tradition that gives us tissue silk with that unmistakable shimmer, to the houses producing art silk, satin silk and Dola silk, to the soft fancy sarees so many of you reach for on a working Tuesday — we visit, we feel the fabric, we hold it against light, we ask about the weave. The sarees that earn a place in the Ashoka Threads catalogue have passed through three generations of family judgement, refined into a single retailer's instinct: fabric first, drape second, motif third, never the other way round.
We do not weave the sarees. We do not pretend to be the master at the loom. What we are — what we have always been — is the family that has chosen sarees well, for other families, since long before any of this was online.
What every Ashoka Threads saree comes with
- Hand-picked from across India — selected for fabric integrity, drape, finish and occasion fit before it reaches the storefront.
- Hand-checked before dispatch — pallu fall, border alignment, blouse piece, tassels, all inspected at the table, not at scale.
- Blouse piece included — a matching unstitched blouse fabric ships with every saree, ready for your tailor. We have been including blouse pieces for 80+ years; we are not about to start charging extra for it now.
- Ready to ship — no pre-orders, no made-to-order waits. Every saree on the storefront is in stock and dispatches within 1-2 working days.
- 7-day returns on eligible items — so you can place the saree against your jewellery, your blouse fit and your venue light before you commit.
The family shop ethos, carried online
For 83 years, we have been the place families come to for the sarees that mark their biggest days. The conversations were quiet, slow, personal. Someone in the family knew someone in the shop. A saree was chosen against a blouse piece you had been turning over in your hand for ten minutes. Tea was offered. The right saree, when it found you, felt found.
The internet does not naturally carry that warmth. We are trying to bring it across anyway. Every product page on Ashoka Threads is written like a quiet conversation — fabric explained, occasion fit told straight, care advised honestly. WhatsApp is open if you need to ask which saree your sister-in-law would actually wear to the reception. Returns are 7 days because we know that drape only really tells you what it is once you have seen it on yourself, in your own light.
Who we are curating for
The Ashoka Threads customer is the saree wearer in Tamil Nadu and the Indian metros — from Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai and Trichy through to Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Pune and Kolkata — who wants a saree that performs across the Tamil festive calendar (Pongal, Margazhi, Karthigai Deepam), the wedding circuit, and the demands of a working week. We deliver pan-India today, and Sri Lanka and the Middle East are next on our shipping map.
What's coming
Two things are quietly being built behind the scenes, and you will see them on the storefront when they are ready — not before.
Pure silk and 100% Silk Mark Certified Pure Silk Sarees. Today our catalogue covers a curated spread of saree fabrics — Banaras tissue silk, art silk, satin silk, Dola silk and fancy sarees — and we are upfront about which is which. The next premium tier we are working toward is a separate, clearly labelled line of pure silk and Silk Mark Certified Pure Silk Sarees, sourced and authenticated to the standard the certification demands. When it goes live, it will be unambiguous. We will not slip pure silk in under another name.
Kurtis and ethnic wear. Customers have been asking us to bring our curation eye to kurtis, co-ords and the wider ethnic wardrobe. It is on the way. As with sarees, we will only list pieces that pass the same hand-check we have applied for 83 years. Until then, we stay sarees-only — because doing one thing well is the only way we know how to begin.
A note on what we don't do
We are not interested in marketing claims we cannot back up. We do not say every saree in our catalogue is pure silk — most are not, and you will always know exactly what fabric you are buying. We do not claim weaver-direct artisan relationships — we are a retailer with deep curation expertise, which is a different and equally honourable trade. We do not chase trend colours that age in six months. And we do not list anything we would not let our own family wear.
